water change question

I'm new here and haven't seen a thread about this, so if there is one I apologize for the repeat. But I'm new to bettas and fish in general. I currently have a 1 gal tank w/filter. How often should I change the water and how do I do it? It's only been a few days and I noticed food settling at the bottom already. I also just found out that I need a heater. I will be getting one in a few days. How does that work out when I change the water. I don't want to stress out my betta.

if it's only 1 gallon, you should do 100% water change every other day. Since it's not big enough to cycle, so you have to keep the ammonia down to avoid disease and harmful bacteria. When you feed your betta, don't walk away, feed it one at a time. Remove excess food to avoid build up ammonia. Fish will be stress out if you change water, but it is better than the water toxic burn their eyes and gills. If possible, i would suggest upgrade it to a 2.5 gallons. It is not that much bigger and not that expensive but it would help tremendously because a heater does not work well in a 1 gallon

I have a aqueon 1 gallon it was my first tank I didn't want to waste it
Usually I do a 100% water change once a week
Heaters are tough with 1 gallon right now I have the mini aqueon 10w heater
Since its small it heats up quick so get a theometer and check every 1 hour or so they can heat up fast one time I came home from work it was at 90 degreea
