if it's only 1 gallon, you should do 100% water change every other day. Since it's not big enough to cycle, so you have to keep the ammonia down to avoid disease and harmful bacteria. When you feed your betta, don't walk away, feed it one at a time. Remove excess food to avoid build up ammonia. Fish will be stress out if you change water, but it is better than the water toxic burn their eyes and gills. If possible, i would suggest upgrade it to a 2.5 gallons. It is not that much bigger and not that expensive but it would help tremendously because a heater does not work well in a 1 gallon
