Thank you. you aren't kidding about carbon cartridges getting pricey!
I am going to look into this more, I like the idea. It is basically the same idea marineland and more expensive manufacturers sell. (Bio Wheels, etc...) I have one tank that I cultivate gravel to hold "good" bacteria for water changes, quicker cycling etc.....
I am a lone hobbyist, so a lot of what I do seems very backwards after I read all the stuff you guys do on here LOL

Tell me about it. I wanted a single cartridge for the aqueon - to get furan 2 out of the tank with the carbon. They only come in 3 packs and it was like $10 on sale. I only had about $5

Yup, pretty much the same concept - except the marineland ones do have a place for a cartridge with carbon in addition to the biowheel.

My first filter purchase was a marineland biowheel style one. took me about two weeks to realize....hey...wait a minute....LOL
