Need Help! Huge Belly...

This guys belongs to my best friend, shes moving into her first apartment and isn't taking the fish right away, and since her parents are new to fish she asked me to take him and see if I could do anything for him.

I have honestly never seen anything like this before, his stomach is HUGE and it looks hollow almost like a balloon filled with air. He has difficulty swimming, but he IS going to the bathroom. It almost looks like a giant gas bubble in his stomach.

Has anyone ever encountered something like this before? She's tried fasting, epsom salt, and feeding daphnia. I've begun treating him with maracyn plus incase its an internal bacterial infection.

Thoughts would be great!

Maracyn Plus is a good call. How many epsoms? 1-3tsp is good here along with the. You need to predissolve and add slowly over the hour or so, not all at once.

What does the poop look like?

Could also be a tumor. They look like that. Sounds like you're doing the right thing though. Hopefully the Maracyn Plus along with epsoms will clear that.

The poop looks mostly normal, just slightly stringy, he has an appetite but I don't think feeding him is a good idea. She was treating with 2 tsp. of pre-dissolved epsom salt in her 5 gallon, but he's now in a 1/2 gallon hospital tank at my place so I'll have to figure out the proper dosage for that.

2 tsp in a 5 gallon isn't even a 1/2 tsp per gallon. Increase epsoms to be 1-3 tsp per gallon. So in a 5 gallon that would be 5-15 tsp. In a half gallon that's half 1 tsp to 1.5 tsp.
