My Betta are fighting!

I got a Betta last week and just added three more to the mix tonight. After letting them settle a few minutes I see that a newer one and my previous girl are going at it, plucking at each other and grabbing at each others lips!
They're all female, all about the same young size. I suppose the new gal picking on (or being picked on) is a little smaller.
Is there anything I should have done to prevent this?

The first two questions I am going to ask, is what is your tank size and how is your tank set-up?

What you have now is a sorority tank. There are special requirements for a sorority tank because as you have witnessed female bettas can be as aggressive and unpredictable as males. Fighting during the initial introduction period is normal. But if this fighting goes on for quite a long time or a lot of damage is being done you are going to need to separate out the aggressor.

Unfortunately, that only leaves you with three females which is not an ideal number for a sorority. Having only three females usually leads to the weaker one being ganged up upon by the other two.

Well I have them in about a 3 gallon tank cause they're still pretty young, about an inch. I'm working on their 10 gallon Saturday.
I am a little skeptical that it's a terrible thing. It's only been about 45 minutes they've been together. I'll watch them of course. Just got spooked.

The best setup for a sorority would be at least a 10 gallon tank with lots of plants and hiding places.

They need lots of hiding places and planted areas... Open space can make them fight..

Have a read: http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=29402

I would separate them before you lose one. You need to add them all together. The tank needs to be fully ready.

Hopping like a college sorority during Rush week. I had to give an individual tank to one of my girlies because she grew WAY bigger than the other three I had. I had a school yard bully on my hands.
