Doubletail Veiltail?

Is there such a thing as a DT VT? I have a DT male who was labeled as "Halfmoon doubletail", but he has never flared his fins. He flares his face, but he has never stretched out his fins. He almost looks like a VT because of the way his tail always droops. Here's a picture.

Hey there,

Yes there is such a betta as a VT DT also known as a long fin double tail. A VT DT more or less looks like a veiltail only with two caudal lobes. The end on these lobes usually are rounded compared to a regular VT that is pointed.

The half moon DT is easy to identify. When fully flared their caudal fin still has a total spread of 180 degrees and the caudal edges are straight not curved like a veiltail.

It is difficult to tell from the photo which your boy is but if his caudal edges are straight then he is a HM DT

I cannot say for sure but going off what I see in the photo I would say he is a HM DT.

Have you attempted to strengthen his muscles out by using a mirror and flaring him daily for 5-10 mins? Would help to build his strength so he won't always be "droopy".

another way is to leave his tank light on, but turn the room lights off. it will make him reflect on the glass wherever he goes, and is excellent flaring exercise.

I agree on the exercise.

It is hard to tell from the photo. Look closely at the rays (ribs) in his tail. If they split once into two rays at the tip, he's a VT. If the rays split twice into four rays at the tip, he's a HM (or could be with enough exercise).

Great looking blue-eyed fish. Love that color.
