You can grow semi aquatic plants in filters.

we use to put panty hose over the filter intakes, it doesn't bother water flow.

Panty hose test is rubbing pantyhose on decorations if they decoration breaks the pantyhose get rid of it.

We didn't leave it in there we just put a piece over it to make sure it didn't suck it up. We figured if it sucked up the piece of plastic bag then it'd probably do the same to him, which thankfully it didn't.

I also use pantyhose over the intake valve. Every couple of days I have to move it around a bit, sine it gets sucked in so much no water gets in.
