Light time

I have live plants in my 5 gallon, with a 6500K bulb. The guy at the aquarium shop said give them 10 hours a day, with some natural light through a window. Does the 10 hours need to be the same timeframe everyday? Or can it vary? I have been doing 10 hours so far, but it's been sometimes 8pm when I turn it off, sometimes it's 10pm. I have a different daily schedule due to school. Does that matter? Thanks in advance!

Doesn't seem to matter, at least in my limited experience.

You can also put it on a timer so you don't have to think about it.
