Have Medicines for Betta, Performing 100% change and maybe adding plants, need advice

Ok the eye has receded some. I do not have a gravel filter yet, I'm having trouble with debit card payment passing through. I have to leave on Saturday and come back sunday night. Should I clean the water before or after?
I have been running the filter very rarely, as it badly upsets the betta even with a baffle and a few plants around it. He gets swept around and stuff.
By when should his eye be back to normal?
I also added a tank hood I made from a cardboard box and tape so I no longer have lights hanging precariously and he cannot go out. Three of his 4 tank sides are covered in an aquascape background, and the 4th looks out on an empty dark room. Is this optimal for the betta, stress wise?
