rescue betta fin rot??

well last betta for a while, wanted somthing flashy but this poor guy was upside down in his tank, i bumped and he jumped up ready to attack. ok he is a crowntail and his fins are full but just look straggaly(if that is a word) he lays on his side at the top of the water. I gave him a gentle poke thinking he was dead at one point but he shot off and flaired the best he could. He is in a gallon QT, i gave him a small plant to prop on and he seems to like it. is this amonia poison since his bowl was black from gunk or is it fin rot. somtimes he swims to the bottem but comes up quick like he cant stay down. I am not a fan of saving fish as it only tells the chain to order more, but this boy flaired after me shaking his bowl showing me the fight was still in him

gimme a sec. this was taken ealier, he is scarred of me, and i cant get a descent one. he seem almost 50% better, since a clean tank, though he still lays on his side

What color is his poop?

I would use low doses of epsom salts around 1/2 tsp per gallon - pure 100% magnesium sulfate no additives per ingredients label - predissolve and add slowly over about an hour to acclimate and avoid potential ph shock. Stress Coat at 1 ml per 1 gal can also help fins regrow.

Ok thanks, his poop looks normal. Got up this morning to a big bubble nest. Made me feel a little better

What you are describing sounds like swim bladder disorder. It is often caused by constipation in neglected bettas, but you said he is pooping? If the feces look normal, I'd just keep him in clean, heated water and let him regain his strength. Since it sounds like he is doing better, the issue may just resolve itself with good care - he sure is one lucky betta :)

thank you, ok he has pooped once, now i feel paranoid what do if he does have swim bladder, I have lots of tanks, but never faced that.. only ick

Epsom salts treat SBD. As long as his poop is normal it hasn't turned into a GI infection yet.
