Film on top of water

I've noticed there has been some film looking stuff on the top of the water of my fish tank. I'm not sure what it is and I am a little worried it could hurt my betta.
The tank has been used before and was cleaned before reuse. The rocks are fairly new and I have a live plant inside the aquarium. (Just in case this was the cause, but I am not sure) Has anyone had this happen to their aquarium before, and is it safe?

Could be plant matter decaying.. could have a water quality problem.

How did you clean it?

More info might help: http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=49233

Often this is just a natural protein build-up and nothing to worry about. How big is the tank and how often do you clean it? What is it stocked with?

What does it look/feel like?
As Kyt mentioned, it could easily be excess protein which is very common, and non harmful. Just unsightly. To remove it just use a clean paper towel or napkin and skim the top of the tank to remove the gunk.

If it looks oily it could be from any left over food that wasn't eaten/cleaned, or possibly the gravel not being cleaned enough.. water changes will get rid of it.

Basically, just describe the film and we can help you out if it's not either of those :)

Unless you have bad house keeping for your Betta it's usually protein buildup. Not saying you are so please take no-offense. Lol the oil slick question needs to be stickied. I am a new member but have seen this topic several times :)
