split 5.5 tank.. a problem

So a live betta got returned to petco, def not a petco or smart betta, it is a very nice HM koi plakat. So i took it from them, he is a small boy, i had to split my 5.5. I got a clear one and since yesterday all the do is flair at each other. I know once in a while it would be fine, but i am worrying it is stressing them. could i spray paint it, I know krylon fusion is tank safe.

Do you have a picture of the tank currently? If you make sure there is an abundance of coverage on both sides, eventually both should calm down. Signs of stress: Stress lines (see more on darker bettas), tail biting, and lethargy.

If you use AQUARIUM SAFE paint, it should be fine... Or, another route is to overlap white craft mesh (commonly used for cross stitching) as your divider instead. I use those ;)

Well, by the looks of it give them each a hidey hole, and see how that goes. I always make sure mine have a place to retreat.

Some bettas cannot be in split tanks... They do get too stressed. But sometimes they can be compatible. See what works.

I made little caves for my divided tanks with the crafting mesh Sena mentioned. The mesh was .59¢ and the nylon tread was about $1.00. I can make 3 caves from on sheet. My boys love them and I know the interior is a lot smoother then the floating logs. I use a suction cup to hold them in place with the top being slightly out of the water. I got the suction cups for .99¢ a 6 pack. You can double up the mesh to make them less see through or sandwich moss in between.

All of my boys (save the lucky one in the 20g with my fiance's violet goby) are in divided tanks - We just used the black crafting mesh. They can see each other a bit through it and they flared for a day or so, but now they're used to it and don't react at all.

I like the idea about the caves using the mesh. I may try that, Phaydra!
