Baby snail in my tank!!

I'm pretty excited. My snail laid eggs and now I have this:



I have a 29 gal NPT. Snails are considered a good thing for an NPT because they dig and relieve any anaerobic conditions in the soil, so this is why I'm excited, but is this a good sign or just normal? I'm thinking it's a good sign, but I have a few questions.

Do snails lay eggs only when conditions are right/when they're comfortable or do they always just lay eggs? How often do they lay eggs? And, how many do they lay at a time?

My snail is an apple snail if that makes a difference.

Perhaps it wasn't my snail who laid the eggs... I only have one, and they need to be fertilized, correct? At any rate, I got a new snail! haha

It depends on the type of snail. Mystery snails for example must have a male & female in order to have eggs, they lay their eggs above the water line & there are 100's of them in a clutch. It's possible it came in on a plant. Did you treat your plants before adding them to the tank?

No I didn't. I really need to learn to be more patient with that sort of thing, but I'm definitely not opposed to them being there.

congrats... you have a common pond snail. They will reproduce like mad.

Thanks, Fang! I know I'm more excited than I should be, but I was looking for MTSs to aerate my substrate and couldn't find any (because they're typically a pest). Do you think these guys will do the same thing? And do they get big/have a big bio load?

yeah you do need a male and a female snail, like they said. HOWEVER if you had a female, and she mate before she came to you, she could potentially lay eggs for MONTHS.

Though that's definitely a pond snail. i love snails. even my pests lol.

Hmm, I guess I'll find out - he/she was in a tank with other snails at the pet store. They're definitely interesting creatures.
