My sorority fell apart.

All of my girls started breathing heavily.. then they died.. there's only one left. I was wondering what the problem could be. They shared the tank with 3 snails.

But with the breathing heavily especially, do you know what your ammonia levels were and was the tank cycled? I had a tank recently crash and the ammonia spike caused my goldfish to breathe extremely fast almost like they were gasping for breath.

How has your betta fish's appearance changed?-Kamilia (orange) wasn't swimming or eating, (not even from when I first got her, and she pineconed and was breathing heavily. I decided to put her down.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed?-Heavy breathing, staying at the top or bottom.
When did you start noticing the symptoms?- A few days after I put my 2 new girls in the tank.
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how?-No.
Does your fish have any history of being ill?-No.
How old is your fish (approximately)?-Not sure.

I do also admit when cleaning the decor I used a drop of Dawn in a large tub, because we thought the Clorox was killing them.

I only feed my snails every 2-3 days because they poop a lot.

Also, I changed the water on sunday, but now yesterday, Ema (last one) is getting the same symptoms.

I don't. I also admit I changed the cartrige before I saw the do not change the catrige post.

But it's been up since September or November of last year.

If you are getting readings of 0.25ppm for ammonia and nitrite that is saying to me that your tank is not cycled. However, are you sure your nitrates are correct? Generally they are around 10-25ppm.

What are you using to test your water with?

Sounds like to me that it is possibly related to water quality. If you replaced your filter cartridge, there may have been a sudden spike that you didn't pick up on. Then if your current readings are correct, the constant exposure to low level ammonia/nitrite may have been enough to make them quite sick and subsequently die.

What kind of snails? I mean if they were apple and are fairly large and create a lot of waste as I know my boy does, plus the filter cartridge was replaced thus breaking cycle there could have been a big ammonia spike. Either that or have you introduced new fish or plants recently?

Mystery snails. I had ADF'S at some poing.. and I did introduce 2 new girls.
