Banana plant stem "peeling"?

Has anyone seen anything like this? The stem on my banana plant is peeling/disintegrating. I have attached a picture for you guys to see, thanks in advance for any help.

It looks like the stem is rotting because there is no longer a leaf at the top. Simply pinch it off as close to the base as you can and it should be fine and continue growing nicely. :)
