Smile I'm new here! :)

Hi,
I'm new to the site today. I use to have a betta many, many years ago. I just got one yesterday from my best friend as a late Christmas gift. What a surprise. I need to freshen up on my fish info. I do have a 5 gallon tank though for starters.
This is my little fishy. I have yet to give a name since its only been a day of having it. My question is, is my fishy a male or female? All I know is the coloring is beautiful and that its a crowntail.

Thanks for looking!

it is a male. you have a beutiful specimen. you can tell it is a male because of the long flashy fins. generally males have long fins.

Thank you. My friend who gave it to me said it was a female. I was thinking it was male. So I wanted to stop the debate, lol. ;)

I didn't know I was getting the fish at all, so I'm not prepared. I do have two fake plants and a 5 gallon tank. No hiding spot at all, no heater, nothing on the surface either. So hoping the little guy makes it. I hope to get some much need things as soon as possible.
