For those of you that use a sponge on the filter output to baffle, what kind of sponge do you use? The ones I see at the store all look and feel pretty rough. Even if you don't use that kind of baffle, do any of you know of some soft and gentle aquarium safe sponge?

Now I don't live where you are, and things may be different, but I'm pretty sure they sell aquarium safe sponges at any pet or fish store - I'm not sure of your fish stores.
If I can't find sponge for my filters I use these wiping cloths called ... (Hmm sorry name has slipped) but I use them as they are not only safe, but also not too thin and not too thick, and allow for great filtration. (Are they called Scotchbrite? Or something... Just check)
In researching how to do a sponge filter, one person used a regular sponge from the store, free of detergents or any additives, I think those are softer than what your referring too.
Like an actual sponge that you would use for dishes?!
PLease dont try that. I used one in my filter *chemical free* for about a week because I ran out of actual filter floss. It fell apart so fast it was disgusting.
Personally I just bought a filter sponge (random Fluval one) and just elastic banded it on. I guess its not the softest thing, but once its wet its softer? My betta buddy has never had any issues with it. I don't think I would use a regular cleaning sponge, because I think they would disintegrate and you can't be sure they're 100% chemical free.
