Those bulbs are probably Aponogeton bulbs. Try putting them in the gravel. Watch out, they could rot and spoil the water conditions.

Ok so I did a little research and found out that the heaters come in different wattages. Which would be optimal for a 5 gal tank?

A 25 watt would be good, considering I have a 50 for my 10 gal.

Thanks to all, this is quite possibly the most helpful forum I have ever used. I will look into getting a heater tomorrow (weather is kinda bad right now and tires have little tread left) :(

tank mates...

now that I have this 5 gal tank, its pretty spacious for just Skittles and I want to get some tank mates for him. But because bettas are aggressive, I dont know what can live with him. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A mystery snail?

5g is a perfect size for one betta. I wouldn't recommend any more fish.

It depends on your Betta but Corydoras Catfish might work or an african dwarf frog. but if your betta is pretty aggressive i wouldnt recommend any fish.

What about a female betta? I've heard that males and females dont really bother eachother. I dunno... I could be wrong.

Male and Female bettas can not be put together, except during breeding by some one who has done allot of research. Otherwise they will be seriously injured or killed by each other.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the forum.
