@Callistra, I don't want to do 100% water changes because I have live plants in there. All the decor and plastic plants are smooth and pretty soft.

If it will be awhile until you get another heater, I would place the current one horizontally at the bottom of the tank. Actually, I recommend doing that with any heater. It does make it harder to reach the adjustment dial but it will heat the tank more evenly.
