Please help! (Filter sponge)

Is this right? What/how should I do it differently? if I am doing it wrong.

This will help defuse the current coming out of the filter if that is your question. It is not what is known as a sponge filter.

This is a true sponge filter....

ok! thank you for replying. i saw a sticky someone posted about doing this to not only reduce current flow but to build up good bacteria. it wasnt working out for me like his pics showed. i just wanted to make sure this wasnt bad & if its the right kind of sponge.

I'm guessing you were referring to mine since you've got the same pump as me. Yes, you're using the right kind of sponge. The important one is the one below the outflow. The one behind the filter cartridge isn't really going to help baffle the outflow, so you can remove it if it causes any problems.

Looks good to me. I use the sponge instead of the aqueon cartridges - much cheaper in the long run - I use Aquaclear filter foam but I removed the blue part that is supposed to hold the cartridge.
