You have to look for a number of things, first being the egg spot, a little white spot under the belly. Females will have this BUT at the same time so will young males. You have to be careful with that. Also overall body shape of males and females, and looking at the fins and beards. Females will have bears but males will be more impressive, of course that starts showing a little later but as fry get their colors it starts to get easier to tell them apart. At 3 months it was very obvious my baby was female.
