A 25 watt should suffice but use an adjustable one the preset tend to have a large variance in temp swings.

I think it is fine as long as it has adjustable heat settings, just that it will heat up the tank faster. But make sure the the tank is deep enough to have it submerged if it is a submersible or the depth of water will reach the min. Water level setting. Consider this an investment when you upgrade to a bigger tank later. BUT the heater may consume too much space to affect the aesthetic of the tank if that is a concern of yours. They are on sale at PetSmart & Petco, but Amazon has a much better deal with the German brand that starts with an "E"

50 is bit much, but if it is adjustable...

I don't have it yet, but I would not buy anything other than an adjustable one, probably Tetra brand. (I have a gift card to petsmart, so I'd go there to get it) I was just wondering as I plan to upgrade the tank to a 10 gallon and divide it in the next month or two.

I have seen other people do it with no problems so I think it would be just fine :)

Only concern is it would heat the water rather quickly so as long as it's a good one that isn't going to let it drop a degree or two and then re-rise over again and again it should be okay.. Definitely test it 24 hours to make sure no dips.

Tetra doesn't make any good adjustable heaters. I would get an Aqueon Pro, Jager or Marineland Visitherm myself.

+1

Also set it to a low temp at first just to be safe. Then once you have it's calibration and everything figured out, you can tinker with it until you get the temperature you want.
