New tank, new friends (hopefully)

Hi all! My friend gave me a 10ga tank for my betta, and while it's cycling I'm going to be learning about what other fish, etc. I can put in there!

It's 10ga, right now about 84 degrees F. Sponge filter and air pump. I'm going to plant it with live plants and have a flourescent light on it during the day. My friend is going to give me some guppies to help with the cycling, as he says they're very hardy and should be able to handle it.

But what other fish can I add?

Anyway, I'm REALLY excited my little guy is getting out of that teeny 2ga!!

I don't know about guppies being hard, I've always have known goldfish for that job, but a 10g is to small for a goldfish. Guppies are not good for bettas because it can make the betta feel threatened. You really can't put a lot of fish in a 10g, Maybe 1 or 2 SMALL fish and some snails or shrimp. If you want to do a schooling then you will need to upgrade to a 20 as a minimum, but also with a 20g you have more options as betta tank mates.
For the 10g i would stick with maybe a cory or 1-3 tetras of some sort, or shrimp, or snails OR you could devide the 10g and have two bettas. Also dont get any tail nippers and no (semi-aggressive and aggressive fish)

I've heard that guppies used to be very hardy but not anymore due to their being bred in captivity.
