At first I had problems with it sucking up the gravel, but once I got the hang of it, it only picks up the poo. Just don't put it too close to the gravel and it should be fine. It will still pick up 2 or 3 pieces of gravel but I poor the old water on my plants so it doesn't mater for me. I think I have the medium but I don't really remember; I got it a while ago.
I think I will get the medium...do you have the mini though? Or was I wrong?
I think I have the medium, because I'm pretty sure I bought mine based on what it said on the package. Also, the siphon is pretty strong so just make sure you keep an eye on your betta while vacuuming. I don't have to worry too much because my betta stays away from it anyway, but if yours is really curious then just be catious.
I bought a battery powered kerosine pump from walmart works great on all of my tanks have tanks from 2 gallon to 10 7 tanks all together so yeah I need the speed, I would just recommend removing the fish while using and most of my tanks have the big glass beads over top of gravel to keep it from getting sucked up, works well next I am going to get enough hose for it to run to sink or something so I don't have to use a bucket.

Okay I will. I'm pretty sure that goes for any fish with any siphon in any aquarium. You never know what could happen...
I have the Top Fin (PetsMart's house brand) small, and I love it. Unlike most siphons, it has a squeeze bulb to get started and provide more suction when you want it. I recommended it highly. I use it in my 3 gallon, so a 5 gallon should be fine.
