my first rescue just died

I got him Friday, put him in some clean warm water and some AQ salt. This morning he died.

I'm not sure what was wrong with him. His fins were either chomped or rotted and his dorsal fin seemed to be cracked or folded at the body, it never stood up. No signs of any kind of fungus or wounds.

Anyway, any ideas as to his ailment? Or was he just too far gone?

I got him free from Petco, a "true rescue" according to the betta rescue police He came in a shipment mid-week last week, got him Friday night. Not even named yet.

Aw, I'm sorry he didn't make it. But at least you gave him a clean, warm home for the last few days.

i'm not even sure what his true color would have been, any guesses?

His yellow could've gotten brighter or stayed that neat dark color with more healthiness in the fins?

I was hoping he would become orange and black
