My HMPK calms down after he see's a certain betta for a while but he starts off flaring like crazy. I ended up putting a block between his view of my other betta next to him though. I don't want him to get use to the sight of him since I need them to flare for pictures. I consider the HMPK to be like the Arabian horse. They are not crazy, aggressive, or wild. They are closer to wild types and fighting types but I don't consider them aggressive, they are spirited. But with that spirited nature you just have to learn to deal with it. He should calm down after a while, let him get use to the other betta and huff and puff until he gets bored. That was what my HMPK did, he flared and flared but realized exploring his cave was more exciting and it was fun to pop out and scare his snail room mate off the glass xD
I think my plakat boy is definitely more aggresive than my HMDT and CT boys. I gave August his own 5 gallon tank because I've heard they need more room to swim around. He is CONSTANTLY flaring at himself in the glass, or at me, or at my fingers, or really at anything. My other boys flare at their reflection a little at night but nothing like the plakat. Definitely makes things interesting, though!
Ha, my HMPK boy is more chilled, he won't flare at his own reflection smart boy, he only flares at other living fish. I think my vt male is more aggressive than the HMPK, he will flare all day at the HMPK's tank even when Capy is off doing his own thing. I also think my vt might have been involved in fighting as well, perhaps to train fighters? He has scars all over his face and gill flaps. He was also very badly ripped up when I got him and gets so nervous with tank mates he goes pale and won't eat.
They're just more active and ready to fight I guess. They don't have to drag around those big fins. And I think most have a fiery personality which is why I love them.

5+ gallons are best for them since they are so active. They love to swim around more than my vt male and my dthm did. He also likes to challenge the filter and swim under the waterfall to prove he's stronger than the current.
I saw a pretty marble HM the other day when I went with my brother to stock his tank. I'll have to keep an eye out for one!
The problem with VT is that they all seem to have mild fin rot. Flare (my siggy) was a VT so I reallly wanted to get another one is his honor, but now I'm a little spoiled. My HM has the most beautiful fins of all my boys.
I love HM's! But seems like HMPK'S have more interesting colors so I've been getting into them
Myates, I forgot to add, I have two snails in DK/Bruce's tank named Fox and Alfred. ;)
LOL too funny.. got an all black HMPK today.. was thinking of calling him Bruce after Batman :) I already have a Superman (blue/turq dragon body with red fins).. he also jumps out if given the chance.. so he can "leap taller than a tall tank in a single bound". And another dragon named Fin Fang Foom from Iron Man :)

Haha, glad I'm not the only one! I may do an Avengers theme Colllection next lol. But my fish fit their names perfectly too. Joker is crazy/funny and aggressive, Harley Quinn is really hyper and loves to play random games, Bruce Wayne( is a flashy and a little strange), DK is very antisocial and elusive, and Harvey two face is handsome on the outside, but mean on the outside. :) Bruce would be a good name! I love Black fish, too! I bet he is really pretty!
