URGENT! Betta dying from rotten plant

I have had a few bettas over the years, but this is my first time owning an aquatic plant. Anyway, Raja Ram is in a 1 gallon tank, and i honestly didn't realize how rotted the plant was until i saw how horrible he looked today. He has not shown any signs until now. I removed the plant and have him in a small clean bowl, but he doesn't look so good. He has no signs of fin rot or anything like that, only signs of dying. He's sitting either at the very top of the bowl, or lying at the very bottom. appearing to be dead, and then gasping for air at the top of the bowl.
What can i do to save him?!?! Please help!

Sounds like ammonia poisoning..

I would do a series of 2-3 50% water changes at least 10 minutes apart using same temp water (use his tank thermometer to match running tap - fill up your changing container, add conditioner, then add to tank)

Thank you so much for reading but, it seems that in the time it took me to do some research and type this, he has passed.
