Yeah, you should do 50% water changes in a 5 gallon. The people on other forms are probably talking about a larger tank, like 10 gallons.

What was the tank question Elli?
Cycling will never happen without appropriate water changes.

HM's and DeT's are notorious for tail biting. You won't see him do it probably but the heavier the fin the more likely they are to bite it. Especially if there is a current from the filter.

The best treatment for healing a ripped fin is clean water (and for his sake it is recommended to go beyond the usual twice weekly changes. You'll want to do three or four weekly changes in a 5gallon, upwards of 50% each... Or move him to a smaller tank until you see regrowth) and IAL.

IAL? oh ok i was terrified i did something wrong ... he has 30-40% changes daily ... i think he may be frustrated with his cold tank ( our heat is out his heater is trying its best he is at 70) the heater is being replaced the day i get paid

i would switch to a smaller filter but this one is still working on cycling

You could get a smaller filter, or one that is adjustable, and just transfer the media. That way you don't lose BB.

Cold water is aggravating for bettas accustomed to warm water, so he might have bitten for that reason.

IAL is indian almond leaf. You can buy them on ebay for dirt cheap because they really are just leaves. They tan the water which makes it like tea colored. Bettas LOVE a black water environment. http://bettysplendens.com/articles/p...?articleid=898
