How often should I be changing the water?

My fish, King, just got an upgrade to a 5 gallon filtered tank. He was living in a 1 gallon bowl before and I did 100% water changes every 2-3 days.

How often should I be changing his water, and how much of it? The tank isn't cycled, and probably won't be for a while.

The only plants he's kept with are four marimo moss balls. He has one tall silk plant and a betta hammock with the wire removed.

While the tank is cycling you'll probably need to do water changes every 2-3 days, I do 50% others do less. Once cycled a weekly 50%+ (my preference) is fine. Are you going to be testing the water daily with a liquid test kit? If so that'll tell you when a water change is necessary, when I did fish IN cycling I did a 50% whenever my ammonia or nitrites were >.25 which averaged every 2-3 days.
