Exclamation melafix experience

My betta, Homer, has an inflamed gill, so I went to purchase a water additive to treat the problem. When I put him in a test bowl beside his tank with the extra water treatment, he immediately began convulsing in pain. He was quickly put back into his home environment and is back to his otherwise normal active state. It's unlikely that I'll be using this brand or product again because his reponse was that disturbing. Has any one else had a bad side effect with this product?

Hey there,

Melafix is a very controversial treatment when it comes to bettas and other labyrinth breathing fish. While some have used it with no ill side effects others have had terrible experiences where their fish have even dropped dead!!! Heres the theory, Melafix is a natural product that contains an oil which can be harmful to bettas and other fish that have a labyrinth gland because the oil can coat this air breathing gland and cause the fish to suffocate. The same company that sells Melafix also sells a product called bettafix which is exactly the same thing as melafix but is highly diluted. I do not use either of these medications because I have heard a lot of bad experiences.... not just a few. I refuse to believe that melafix is safe for bettas.... the company must have created bettafix for a reason anyway I steer clear of both just to be safe.

Thanks for the info. I originally started out in search of methylene blue or amacillin, but no one could refer me directly to them or knew remotely what I was talking about in the two largest pet store chains in the US.

Hey there,

Methylene blue works quite well, I have used it on several occasions. You could try sourcing it online......just an idea

They won't. PetCo and PetSmart have a really awesome rep on here for having employees who don't really know much about what they're talking about.

If you find a way to get methylene blue, PLEASE let me know. I would really like to get my hands on it. I'd ask about amacillin as well, but I go into anaphylactic shock from penicillin and it's derivatives....so please just keep that one away from me. xD

I had to order it online much to my dismay... didn't want to wait so I took a chance on the MB being at a chain store. Just found reviews for what appears to be an awesome aquarium shop not too far away so I'll have to check that out.

I always ask about the possibility of express post, it might cost extra but it is so worth it, I ordered bird medication from another state and it arrived the same day I ordered it. I have ordered other stuff that has arrived in 24 hours.

The MB is coming from a site called American Aquarium Products. Has ebay been reliable?
