Sick Betta

Hi,

I recently purchased a betta from petsmart I have only had him for three days and late last night when I was going to bed I noticed he had some large white spots below his mouth.

When I woke up the growths had grown very quickly to other parts of his body and on his head. I went to the pet store and bought some API Fungal treatment and added it to his water immediately. It has been in his water for about 14 hours.

I did this after trying to research common diseases and it seemed to be a fungal disease. The growths are cottony and the one on his head floats above it and in several other places.

It seems he is doing better with the medicine he is moving around a little more but he is extremely lethargic and mostly sits or lays around in the various caves in the tank.

I have several important questions. should I change any of his water as im afraid this will cause more stress, and if so how much? also I want to try to make sure that I properly diagnosed him with the correct disease

Thanks

For a 2.5 g with filter I would do 2 water changes per week: one 50% with the cleaning of the substrate (vacuum) and the other one 50% water removal. Before putting your fish in the new water, make sure you acclimatize him properly. Do you know how to do this? If not, let us know. Acclimatization is a very important process.

You should feed your betta twice a day, in the morning and evening, a few pellets.. let's say 3 pellets in the morning and 3 in the evening. Feeding your betta only twice per week is not enough. Also, one feeding per week you can give him freeze dried or freeze bloodworms or brine shrimps as a treat. In addition to these, you should fast him a day per week. This is very important because it will help clear his digestive system, as bettas are prone to constipation and bloating.

I have a question about the water conditioner... I am not sure I understand right from your post. Did you put both API water conditioner after you changed the water and the API Fungal treatment? Or did you put only the API Fungal treatment?

It's ok then. :)

About acclimatization... After you change the water in the tank put the cup with your betta into the tank and let it to float. In this way the temperature from the cup will become the same as the temperature from the tank. Let him to float like this for a while. Then start to add very small amounts of water from the tank into his cup every 10-15 min for at least an hour. This way he will adjust to the new ph. Then put the fish gently inside the tank.

You can attach photos using the button that has the image of a paper clip.
