Fast or not to fast...

I have been fasting my boy once a week for over the year that I have had him, but he is a chronic tail biter and I'm beginning to thing that fasting him stresses him out...It seems like betta fish are pretty routine oriented... Plus I feed him once a day so I feel like he has plenty of time in between meals to digest...and please don't argue about how several meaps a day is better because I have heard it all before and what I do works for me and I have the belief that they are cold blooded and carnivores yadda yadda but please lets not get into that part of it...

I'm a little confused. Are you asking for advice on whether or not you should fast him? If so I say no.

I feed mine once a day & don't feed them at all on Fridays, mine don't act stressed. They do give me the I'm starving act when they see me, I stay strong & feed them frozen foods on Saturday.

Do you think they would have problems if you didn't fast them?

I don't know. People have said it prevents bloating, but it all sounds arbitrary to me. I mean, why once a week? Why is that the magic number?

There have been weeks when I haven't fasted them. Feeding, IMO, is a personal preference as far as frequency. I have been told by those more experienced than me that they don't need to be fed daily because in the wild they don't necessarily eat every day. Some on here say they need to be fed daily, with one day fasting. Others say they need their meal broken out into smaller meals multiple times per day. You see your fish daily, you know how they're behaving, if you think fasting him one day a week is the cause of his tail biting, or at least part of the cause, then feed him.

IMO, there is nothing concrete, there are guidelines & its up to the individual to determine what works best for his/her situation. We give our experiences/opinions & it may or may not work for someone else.
