suddenly 0 nitrates?

my tank has been cycling for about 3 weeks now ... just a few days ago my water was at 4ppm ammonia , 2ppm nitrites and 5 ppm nitrates

today i tested my tank again and i have zero on all 3 ... this makes no sense ... my ammonia was at 0 , 5ppm nitrites and 20 ppm just two days ago ... today i was expecting 0, 0 , 20 but how did i get 0, 0, 0? my cycle is established... could it be the plants?

even my tap has 5 ppm nitrates and i tested his water twice

Is there a fish in the tank? Yes live plants help with cycling.

Three weeks your tank isn't finished cycling.. normally (unseeded) takes 6+ weeks to fully cycle. Have you been doing small water changes every time you see ammonia/nitrite in the tank?

You mentioned plants, now in the tank how heavily is it planted and what types of plants do you have, amount of them, etc. "Floating, substrate, attached to decor." If a tank is heavily planted and is stocked lightly to fairly full they will definitely make a difference. How much of a difference depends on if the plant feeds and draws nutrients mainly from the water column or substrate.

we figured it out ... The tank was almost cycled ( zero ammonia and on its nitrate spike) then the plants just started using all the nutrients.

As for my plants
1 green gecko
3-4 Java fern
Java Moss
2-3 Lucens crypts
2-3 Lucens x willisi
1 Anubias Nana

The tank is only home to one betta and I dont use ferts yet.

PaulO when you say Ratbellies do you mean actual rats? I have 5 :P

Plants will suck up nitrates from the water. I have to add nitrates to two of my tanks (the ones with a very small bio load) to keep the plants happy.

Yeah I only have 2 rats but I spoil them to no tomorrow and they probably take advantage of that.
