Is it a betta hammock? If it is, check to see if there's a metal wire in the leaf. The wire might rust, which is toxic to fish. People usually take the wire out with pliers before using it.

hmm yes now i tried taking it out and i ended up wrecking it :/ and i felt bad because he likes to sleep on it, so i made my husband go and buy him another one.

how do i take the wire out? last time i tried somehow i pulled the whole thing apart!

Sorry, someone else might be more help about getting the wire out. I think it takes a lot of patience and wiggling? But don't quote me on that, hahaha...

I'm not sure as I've never had one.. I buy plants with leaves like that and my bettas sleep on those.. but you need to remove it until you figure it out because it is not safe. I would also do another 50% water changes once you do to remove toxins it may have leached.

The heater might also be causing a problem if it's allowing swings but you said it's more stable.

I think I read somewhere else on here that you can use pliers to get it out.
Ill have to give it a go!

The heater I had originally caused big swings in temp (2 degrees or more) so I got a new one that is adjustable as the previous one wasnt.
It's an aqua one 25 w heater.
