Exclamation HELP please!!

I did a 50% water change earlier today and used prime water conditioner instead of my usual nutrafin. Copernicus was acting fine since I added him back in, so I left for a movie and came back and checked on him and he looked as if he was sleeping, but his ventrals were all stretched out and he kept sinking to the bottom. I quickly fished him out and got new water conditioned with nutrafin and put him in a small bowl. he seems better, but he's still swimming on the bottom, is very lethargic, and is having a hard time coming to the surface. Im so worried...

Housing
What size is your tank? 5 gal
What temperature is your tank? 80f
Does your tank have a filter? yes
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? no
Is your tank heated? no, my apartment gets hot enough
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? none

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? just started him on omega one betta buffet 2 days ago, I give him one to two pellets with one hikari bio gold
How often do you feed your betta fish? 3x a day

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change? every 2-3 days
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? usually 25%
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? nutrafin but used prime today for the first time

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia: .25 which is why I got prime...my tap water tests at .25
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
pH: 7.4 it's usually 8 though
Hardness:
Alkalinity:

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? outstretched fins...which he never does
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? very lethargic, sinking to bottom, slow and then fast gill movement
When did you start noticing the symptoms? about 10 min ago
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? no treatment, just water changes...did a 50% in his tank too
Does your fish have any history of being ill? no
How old is your fish (approximately)? a couple months? he's still young I know that.

The only new things are a new petco decoration I added since the old one reeked of chemicals after being placed in water. I soaked the new one in hot water and added it about 6 hours ago. Also used a first dose of prime today to help neutralize the ammonia. I have no idea what's going on with him...

Thanks. I just put him back into his tank with newly changed water and tried feeding him, and he ate both pellets I gave him. he's swimming around fine, and color came back into his body. Was it the tank decoration? I don't ever want this to happen again! Hes scavenging the floor, looking for more food so I think he's back to normal...but I have no idea what happened. I'm scared to use the prime again too.

Maybe it was the plant? I don't think the prime would have an effect like that!
Glad he's feeling better :) :)

Petco is selling several decorations which are toxic to fish (see sig). Can you tell us which you bought?

yeah it was this one from the "ruins" collection: http://m.petco.com/product/118898/Pe...ollection.aspx

I originally got the faux resin wood decoration, but I took that one out.

I don't want this to happen again, but I want to get him something he can swim through. he was really starting to like the decoration...until it almost killed him! :[ Any one have any recommendations for SAFE decor? Checked on him this morning, and he's back to his happy self! :]

Marina has high quality plants with NO METAL. I would get those. Also anything that's pure plastic, ceramic, or clay should be fine.

See, the problem is I live in Hawaii and there is only petcos near me. I think we might have a petsmart, but it's pretty far. I've also checked my LFS and they don't really have much for bettas... I have enough plants, but he loves swimming through and in things, so I wanted to get him a structure for that. Has anyone used a website to buy decorations?
