And is the tetra one gentle enough to use with a sponge filter in a 5 gallon and not cause too much of a current for a long finned betta?

Tetra's way quieter. It's also not as strong.

If you find it too strong you can add an airstone to some sponge filters, add more lift tube, a L shape redirect tube.
