Betta not healing, what to do?

I have a red male CT betta who jumped out of his tank back on 12/12/12 and by the time I found him, I thought he was dead he was so black. But I threw him back into his bowl quickly and he came back to life.

He did ok then a week after that he started not eating and acting sluggish. All of his tassels on fins were gone, he had mild fin rot. He somehow made it through that period with me treating him with aq salt and bacteria drops.

Now, he is still not healing. His tassels on his fins are not regrowing-its been nearly 3 months. He is dull instead of the bright red and iridescent colors he had. I bought him a week before I got my other betta, and the size difference is astounding. He is so tiny, even though he is 6 months old. He is less than an inch big...I'd say more like 1/2 an inch!

I am at a loss how to help him. He is having issues swimming because his fins are nearly stumps (there is no fin rot). Any suggestions? Thanks!

Blood worms are like feeding potato chips - very low nutritonal value and very high in fat. If you want to feed them you should feed one once a week in replace of pellet meal.

He should get two small meals a day and one fast day a week.. what pellets are you feeding? If it's a baby the quality of food is imperative. I would use NLS Grow formula but you could use regular NLS and crush them or Omega One Crushed.

I would increase water change to include a mid week 50%.

Your temperature swings are a problem. You temp should be one constant steady temp between 80-82F for this young betta. If your heater can't keep up you should get a different one. I use 50w in all my 5g. You need at least 25w.

You can dose vitachem at 1 drop per gallon to help with growth as well.

When my female jumped out, I upped her water changes to 2 a week. I NEVER change 100% in my 5 gallon tank, it can kill any beneficial bacteria that is trying to grow in there. It's my understanding that with baby bettas, you should do very frequent water changes, but with a filter, you shouldn't ever have to do 100% water changes. You could do 50% 2 or 3 times a week until he gets better, then go back to 1 or 2 a week.

You are getting great help here from our experts. I just wanted to add that you should remove your 'air stone or other type of aeration' if you have this in addition to your filter. If your betta is having trouble swimming then he would appreciate having less current in his tank to fight against. I would also baffle your filter if you haven't already.

Also, on the food. Omega One betta pellets are pretty small, smaller than many of the brands out there (I'm not familiar with the size of New Life Spectrum- the other recommended brand)- they might be small enough as is to meet your needs. Your boy needs good nutrition to help himself heal, and generic tiny pellets don't sound like they provide that. Callistra's suggestion on the Vita-chem is a very good one- I would look into getting that, too.
