35 Hex Suggestions?

A friend of mine is giving me what I believe is a 35 gallon hex aquarium with Stand. I'm thinking planted, small community tank. Looking for plant and livestock and accessory suggestions. I'm partial to the natural looks, but am interested in themed aquariums as well...

What would you do?

I would do an Eco-Complete base topped with some black sand. I'd get a huge piece of driftwood the is very tall so it is very close to the water surface.

For plants, I'd do:
-Java Fern
-Java Moss
-Dwarf hairgrass for a carpet
-Microsword
-Anubias
-Crypts

I'd inject CO2 to make the tank really flourish along with Flourish Excel and other ferts.

For stocking I'd do:
-Pair of German Blue Rams (after the tank has been cycled and running for some time- very sensitive!)
-A school of 18 Golden Pencilfish
-1 Bristlenose Pleco.

I was planning thinking Eco Complete and black sand as well. I like your driftwood idea as well.

Do you really need flourish excel if you are injecting CO2?

What kind of lighting system/Filter/Heater would you recommend?

You do not need Flourish Excel if you are injecting CO2. Excel is a carbon replacement. Flourish comprehensive wouldn't be bad if you are not dosing EI or some other regimen.

What about filters. I'm thinking either a Fluval 206 or an aqua Clear power filter...

Aquaclear, definitely. You get more bang for your buck. I have the aquaclear 50 running on my 26 and a 20 on one of my 10's. They work amazingly. Would never trade it for anything.

If it were me I would go with
a school of panda or dwarf cories.
Tiger Endlers
RCS
and I've been dying to get a sunfish, so I'm going to suggest some of those :)

As for plants:
Regular hairgrass and vallisneria as background plants
blyxa japonica *sp* as foreground or dwarf baby tears :)
crypt petchii as fore/mid ground
Stems of stargras, wisteria, rotala wahlichii, ludwigia
maybe some more crypts or swords

You could also think about getting some riccia to put around some rocks in the foreground, some driftwood with christmass moss and anubias tied to it :)

There are dwarf sunfish. Very beautiful. They can live in a tank as small as a 3 gallon.
