Providing Better Care for my Betta with fin rot

Morning all,

I noticed that my Betta was suffering from some fin rot recently.
It was my fault for neglecting his tank for a bit - it started to build up with diatom algae and didn't look very nice so last weekend i gave the tank a good clean, added some fresh water and bought a little filter for it.

I've been treating with Melafix and added some salt to the water but I'm not thinking that the salt is a bad move due to information i'm getting relating to another post.

Can anyone give me some better advice (other that the sh*t i'm getting form my local store) as he's a great little fish and looks really happy in his 15 litre cube so I just want to provide some better conditions for him.

I will test the water later when I get home but right now i'm after some good advice for helping treat the fin rot.

dont use Melafix! it clould kill your fish (that what i was told) you need AQ salt

Well, for one thing, stop using Melafix. It contains a tree oil that coats the labyrinth organ of your fish, making it suffocate. Bettafix is a really diluted version of it, so personally I wouldn't use it either.

For fin rot, clean water and some AQ salt should work. If you can get your hands on Indian almond leaves, those would be nice too.

Do you have a heater? If you don't, I suggest you get one. Their waters should be around 78-79F with 76 being the minimum.

How often do you change the water? Do you suck out all the poop and stuff?

Ok no heater in the tank no but it's hot here in Australia and my 153 litre tank is currently at 27 degrees so i'm sure he's not cold

So just AQ salt should help him out?

I have got some proper AQ salt in the tank at the moment but should I do a water change tonight to get rid of any of the melafix?

Yeah, you should do a water change.

How much of a change (% wise)

It's been steady recently yes but our place has no heading so it it will fluctuate a bit during the day / night cycle
