IME curly fins is irreversible.... unless it rips and is regrown...

Oh ok does this mean its tail will stop growing then? or will it grow it a weird direction from now on?

it'll continue to be curly... soft water will make new growth less curly.. hard water might make the fins curl more o_O

so soft water is ideal... but not neccessary.

I read that rainwater would be good because it is soft since it has no minerals disolved in it. is this correct?

hmm... Depends on where you live XD i wouldnt use te rainwater in nyc for example, but yes, rainwater is generally soft and low PH :3

hard water is not the only cause. Damage and genetics can play a factor.

But curling of existing non damaged fins is the work of hard water :O
I wish there was reasearch on this... but it tends to make the fins stiffer and less flowly...
and damaged fins healing in hard water just grows back plain funny XD
