Question Do males have egg spots??

Hey guys.

I was staring at my Bettas today and I noticed that if I look really hard I can see what appears to be an egg spot on each of my males. Is this normal? I'm positive they're boys, you can look at my albums for pics if you like... I'm sure it's not ich, as it's in the same spot on every fish and there's only one.

Thanks, ~Saphira

Yes, it is. In fact, it's so common, that the IBC automatically disqualifies males from their shows if they have a white spot.

If I recall correctly, it's considered a defect that is becoming more and more common during to inbreeding.

This is completely normal for pet store bettas. Could that be why they are at pet stores?

Huh. All of my Bettas are from pet stores. Is the spot bad? Is it an indication of unhealthiness? They seem healthy.

No, not a sign of health at all. It's just something that happens on males sometimes, and as dragonlady pointed out, it's quite common with male pet store bettas.
Don't worry, your guys are fine.

It's somewhat common in young/juveniles to see false egg spots in males - it's a way to "fool" adults in thinking they are females as a way of protection. You tend to see it more in plakat juveniles, but it can easily happen in the long finned variety too.

Doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen.. I have never heard of it being a "defect caused by inbreeding", this is something they do for protection.. it's not a deformity. I also have never heard of the IBC disqualifying for that..
It also makes no difference whether or not the fish is a pet store fish... every fish comes from a breeder, whether you buy it at a store or from a person, every one comes from a breeder.

These are natural, common enough form of protection.. nothing wrong with having them, they don't affect the health/well being of the fish in any way and most tend to outgrow them down the road.
