Girls with beards!?

What is this!? All of my "girls" have beards!!! They're next to each other acclimating to the tank temp. All of them can see the others and they're flaring like mad. They all have ovipositors.....I CAN SEE THEIR EGGS POKING OUT. What is this ridiculousness!? Are they supposed to have beards!? Is this...well....normal? Even when I went to breed my other girl, her beard didn't pop out. She was all submissive and eggy and ready to go. Now that she's around another girl, she just pops a beard out like she's had it all along. I've seen a lot of "some girls have beards" things, but this is just weird. All of mine have beards. Now I'm worried. Are they not really girls? Ugh. Freaking gender benders. Ofcourse I would get them ALL.

Okay that sounded silly. I don't see their eggs poking out. I see the part of the ovipositor that sticks out. Still, their beards are rather massive and they have some large fins....BUT THEY HAVE OVIPOSITORS!!! The two largest act pretty agressive. I think one of these girls is as big as one of my boys...but "she" has an ovipositor. D:

Pictures would help, but my girls have beards too. girl beards aren't as big as boy beards just like in humans ;) but yeah. anal fins, ventral fins, ovipositors, and beards are all things too look at wjen sexing bettas. some girls have more masculine traits like long fins. Olympia had a girl with reallt long fins actually. also Sakura8 is the master of ventrals. show her some pics and I'm sure your worries will be put to rest :)

So, I released them... they're all acting rather docile right now...no one's fighting and the most flaring that is going on is at their own reflection. The one that was the most aggressive is just sort of sitting at the top right corner of my tank by the heater. Not really sure what to think of this. She seems a little shocked. She doesn't show her beard now that the other girls can actually swim up to her. Her ventrals are just so thick and long..and she has huge fins...and she has a beard...two of my girls are like this! But they both have ovipositors! Sorry, I'm just blown away by this for some reason. Check it out! In the first pic, she totally looks like a male. Buuuut. The same girl is in the third pic. You can clearly see her ovipositor. The second pic is my other manly girl's ovipositor. I may be over-reacting to this, but I don't get why I never saw their beards before now. >.<

Please excuse the dirty tank sides. I haven't gotten to clean the outside of my tank yet. :3

I can't get one of their beards, but they're HUGE! They won't flare at each other anymore. They actually get along great now. xD Just in their floaty acclimating bags. Apparently all talk. Sheesh, such women. :P

Girls have beards, just not as big as males. My female flares all the time, and is WAY more aggressive than my male, but when she flares, her beard is not near as big as his. He hardly ever flares, and if he sees his reflection, he hides or plays dead. (I have suspicion that if they were ever to end up in the same tank together, she would rip him to shreds)

Phusit was the seller of the big gray girl. She was on sale and marked as a copper. :P

Their beards are HUGE though. I really wish I could get them to full on flare, but everytime they see me looking they stop. xD

That sounds about right. My female figured out a long time ago, that I'm the one holding the mirror, so she doesn't flare at it anymore. She just wiggles at me and looks to see if I'm going to feed her. My male hasn't figured out that I'm the holder of the mirror, and just hides.

That first girl (the gray/red, pardon I can't name betta colors well yet)...doesn't look like a girl to me. I'm thinking boy, just based on finnage and those full ventrals.

My boys, both of 'em, have fake "ovipositors." Another clue, I think, is to look at the fullness of the beard. If it reaches all the way under thier chin and is huge, you're prolly dealing with a boy. When my girls flare, thier beards are smaller and don't reach all the way around the chin, or the lower part of the head area. In males, it's almost like the two gill plates are large enough to almost touch under there. In girls, you won't have anything like that...just plates flaring out to the sides.

Please pardon me if all of my advice turns out to be nonsense. The only cred I have is that many of my 16 babies (I had them in december, now down to my stable 6), had no ventrals, and I had to figure out how to sex them using other factors. One that I thought was female was actually my beautiful boy Norbert, and I had a lot of the same observations/questions as you have now.
