Unhappy Help with my mini heater..

I'm really new here and I literally JUST made an account.. but this is kinda an emergency for me, really..

I just got my betta yesterday and so far it's in a 1 gallon bowl. It survived last night with no heater but the water seemed really cold! (the fish is kept in my bedroom and it's really cold there, especially at night)

I bought an Aqueon 10 watt mini heater for the bowl.. and I'm scared that if I leave it on tonight, it might overheat the bowl. I left it plugged in for 4 hours and so far it's at 79 degrees-ish.
This isn't an adjustable heater.. and the temp just increases every hour..
I really don't know if I should leave it plugged or unplug it.. especially to tonight all the way to when I come back from school (16 hrs)

My house is literally cold but my room is colder. Idk what I should do.. help? I can't buy an adjustable heater until next weekend. :(

The best thing to do would be to upgrade to at least a 2gallon tank. Temperature fluctuates a lot in smaller ones. The heater SHOULD hopefully stop soon, they usually work buy going X degrees over room temperature.

I recommend taking the one you have back and getting this one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tetra-Heater-1-ct/10291808

they have it at Walmart for $14. It keep the tank at exactly 78*, I have 3 of them in different tanks. It's very reliable.

Thanks! :) I can see on my thermometer that the temperature is still slowly rising to 80 and higher, though. Would you recommend that I keep it on overnight..?

I would take it out, reading the reviews on amazon that heater has a bad reputation for overheating to 90*+!!. http://www.amazon.com/Aqueon-Heater-...DateDescending

Since it's at 80* now, I would just take out the heater and put a towel over the bowl to help keep it warm, along with turning on the heater in your home if it's cold. Or if you have a desk lamp with like a 15w-25w bulb you can turn it on and put it over the bowl, that will keep it warm. Just make sure the light isn't too bright.

I would definitely take that heater back and get a reliable one ASAP.

I'll just wrap the bowl with a towel :)
I unplugged the heater but left it in the tank, if that's okay..?

That should be fine. If he survived last night without a heater, I'm sure he'll survive tonight without a heater, considering the temperature is already warm. :D

Until you go to bed I would leave the heater on and closely monitor it, then turn it off before you go to bed if it doesn't turn off automatically by then.
