I think it depends on the betta's personality whether or not he'll tolerate tankmates. Whatever tankmates you decide on keep an eye on them and if a problem comes up then you can take him out and put him in a container by himself.

What are some things I should watch out for if I decide to do a female sorority tank?

You should have at least 10 gallons for a sorority. They'll need plenty of hiding spots and plants, either real or fake. Add them all at the same time. They'll fight among themselves as they try to establish a pecking order. There will be nipping and chasing so you'll have to keep an eye on them. Nipping and chasing is normal but if you see someone getting the crap beaten out of them then you'll have to pull her out. Sometimes sororities work and sometimes they don't. Sisters from the same spawn usually work best as far as getting along goes.

I use Tetra 10 submersible heater in my 10 gallon tanks which I bought from petmountain.com. I use a Whisper 10 filtration system but I have my male in a quarentine tank which he has no filter because I do a daily water change and I actually have a Hydro heater for 2-5 gallon tank. I also have one newest female in her own 2 gallon tank with an undergravel filter and a hydro heater as well. water actually stays really luke warm.
