Sponge filter duh question

I've read the instructions on DIY sponge filters, and it was mentioned that they can be noisy. I really need a quiet filter.
Dumb question: could I use a quiet HOB filter and wrap a sponge around the intake??? Would this choke the filter?
I need sponge filters for my spawning tank and my brine shrimp tank.

You can reduce the noise/flow of a sponge filter with a flow control valve on the airline ... a HOB will not be hurt by filtering the intake, but the flow will likely still be too high for what you need. You can baffle that too, but the sponge filter makes more sense for spawning.
