I just couldn't say no

So I've had an open spot in my 10 gallon divided 3 ways for a couple of weeks now. I was planning on waiting a while before getting another male because I do not have a safe way to heat a quarantine tank. But I saw this guy at walmart. I tried to talk myself out of buying him buy saying that one of his gills looked like it was sticking out too far, and that I didn't have any way to heat him. But as I walked away, I just felt so bad. He was the only male left, and even though he looked cold, he still had energy. I went back and forth on whether I could actually leave him there, and finally decided that I couldn't. I even held him close as we checked out because it was cold. He's nothing special, and probably not an awesome find, but for some reason I was drawn to him. His name is Oliver.

So what do you think? He's floating in his section of the tank, and he's already getting worked up over his neighbors. I'll have to add some plants.

Thanks everyone!

Moonshadow, he's actually an orange-ish color, but I hope he brightens up with warm, clean water.

He even has pale blue coloring on the tip of his tail fin. :)

Quick question, should I change him out of his cup water tonight? I didn't do it immediately because I wanted him to warm up some.

MiyuMikaelson, thanks!

He's very pretty! And I think that once he's in clean, warm water, his orange coloring is really going to be even brighter.

His plastic cup actually doesn't look too bad. But there's no way of knowing how much ammonia is in there. (Unless you have a way to test it.) So I'd say that if you have time to acclimate him tonight, I would go ahead and get the process started.

Do the acclimation extra slowly..... There are different ways to do this, but here's one variation:
  1. Float his cup in the tank for at least 20-30 min so the temp inside is the same as the temp outside. (I'm thinking you've already done this.)
  2. Add a SMALL amount of NEW tank water to the cup. (About two tablespoons, or about 1.5 ounces.)
  3. Let his cup float for about 15 min.
  4. Remove a SMALL amount of water from the cup. (About two tablespoons, or about 1.5 ounces.) Discard it.
  5. Repeat steps 5-7, until at LEAST an hour has passed. (Personally, when I acclimate for the first time, I'll continue this process for several hours. But I'm paranoid. )
  6. Gently release him into the tank.

I too was surprised at how clean the cup water was. I only had time to safely change half of it last night, so today he gets a full change. The cup is serving as his quarantine tank since he will be going into a divided 10 gallon that already has 2 other males.

I'm so excited to see him explore his new home, and I can't believe how attached I am already!!!

LBF, I'm paranoid too during the first acclimation. I take it extra slow because you never know what kind of stress the fish has experienced during other water changes.
