He bit off his tail.
This is not uncommon and fortunately, warm clean water heals it up often in no time. You need to regiment a strict cleaning schedule (if he is in the .5 for now, clean it every 2 days) and you need to get a heater.

Don't use salt though.

Oh, any number of things. I would say most members here have a biter do it for different reasons! My first VT bit bc of a bubbler agitating the water, then he bit for habit. My current VT bit for who knows what reason but stopped when I got a larger tank and divided it with Bowser.

Some bite bc the water is too strong in current (from a filter), then others bite because there are not enough plants, not getting fed on time, water is too cold, tank doesn't get enough light.. Anything you can think of. Sometimes it's hard to find out why they bite, sometimes its as easy as turning on the light and feeding them right away.

sometimes they bite because they can. They don't like you, they don't like themselves. They don't like having big tails. Because they -can-.

I started showing more attention to my sorority more then my original betta and I went to feed him one time and I caught him swimming in circles biting his tail! I tapped his glass and he just glared at me. They bite for many reason. That's just one.
