How much should I really be feeding?

Hi everyone,

It seems like everyone has a different opinion about feeding their bettas... Currently I feed Picasso one pellet, three times a day (a pellet soaked in water is about the size of his eye - I feed him protein-rich pellets). But, what's an ideal feeding schedule? Or at least, what are some opinions? Am I feeding my fish too much?? When I was at Petco the other day, the worker in the aquarium section said that every day was way too often to feed a Betta, and that they only need to be fed every two days... I know Bettas' stomachs are about as big as their eyeball, but how fast do their stomachs empty? I also know that they can technically survive a long time without food, but is that necessarily good?

Also, how often is is ok to give freeze-dried shrimp or bloodworms as treats? Or are those not ok even occasionally?

Thank you!!

Freeze-dried is fine as a treat. And ignore whatever pet store employees say. I feed my fish 2-3 pellets at least twice daily.

I was wondering the same thing! I was in petco today (my last trip there) and the guy told me that twice a day daily was too much. Do once every 3 days and only all they will eat floating. Squishy is a pig and loves to eat! And when giving a treat how often? Once a week?

I had a petco employee tell me the same thing. Right now I feed Luna 1 to 2 pellets a day and he's a very slim & trim fish; I can't imagine letting him go without food for 3 days.

While we're on the subject...what are your opinions on fasting Bettas one day a week? Is that good/necessary to do?

The # of pellets you feed depends on the pellets. For example I feed New Life Spectrum pellets 98% of the time & I feed each Betta 6-8 per day because the pellets are small & don't swell as much as other pellets. When I feed Omega One I feed them 3-4 per day because they're bigger & swell up more. My Bettas will keep eating as long as I keep dropping the pellets & yes I fast them one day a week. Plus they get frozen foods in place of pellets once or twice a week.
Kyle - its not unusual for a fish to spit out the food, suck it back in, spit it out, suck it back in & then finally eat it.

I fast all my fish at least one day a week, I've heard it's good for their tummies. I call it a 'poop day'.

If the pellets are too big for their mouths I've had fish spit them out and then retry to eat them. (:
