What could have went wrong?

I left for a few days and had my step mom take care of my fish and I come back to the tank smelling funny, a fish scared up and not very active. (They were all very happy and swimming around before i left. all very active too) They were all excited for me to be home and for feeding time except for one. I did a complete water change and cleaned all of the decorations and tank. Long story short, she died during the water change. I had her in a smaller separate tank with a heater so she wouldn't be too stressed in a little cup while I was changing things around. I don't see what I did wrong. Maybe my stepmom fed them too much or she just got too stressed out.. :'( Rip Mystery

Poor you, and poor Mystery! My condolences. :(

Have you asked your step-mum if she added anything to the tank/how much she fed?

she looks bloated in the picture..and if like u said the water smells funny (dunno exactly how, but if it's smells like something's rotten in there ) and.."They were all excited for me to be home and for feeding time except for one". then...maybe it IS an overfeed case...but can't tell for sure, not enough info.

She was like that when I got her sadly. My poor baby. I only had her for 2 weeks.

Do you think it would be alright to skip a day of feeding? I usually feed everyday but only enough for each fish to eat a couple of pellets, but last night has me thinking my step mom over fed.

It's actually recommended to let bettas fast a day to let their digestive tracts clear out. I'm so sorry for your loss. :c

I know that when people watch my fish they usually over feed them, their tummies are minute!

I'm so sorry for your loss. My sister overfed my betta to death when I lived at home and it was devastating. :c

I wouldn't recommend those either - they can poison the water. The safest bet is just to not feed them at all whilst you are away. If I go away for anything less than a week, I leave my sitter instructions not to feed AT ALL, because they always feed too much. :)
