Worried about betta!

Hi all I picked up my betta just over a wek ago, until now he seemed absolutely fine and healthy feeding on flakes and frozen feed.
Today I have noticed he seems a bit inflamed and his scales around his neck are shinier and his gill cover looks wider.
He's feeding and swimming as normal I'm just slightly worried as he looks different. I'm awaiting my water testing kit as I ordered online and it should have been here 2 days ago and still not turned up because I don't have it I'm paranoid about ammonia burn and all sorts. I have attached a pic but don't think it's clear enough to see properly. Hope someone can help thank you
Edt. I have been doing 30% water changes every other day and a 50% change today. I have a filter system as I have other fish in the tank adding nutrafin aqua plus and nutrafin cycle as the aquarium supplement to eliminate nitrite and ammonia.
