goldfish are mating!

we don't have anywhere near enough space to accomodate a spawn of goldfish, but two of our goldies (just became old enough to see their cheek stars) started chasing a third around, sniffing her butt and nudging her all around the tank. i just looked it up and it's definitely a mating ritual going on in there. if they do spawn, is it a fairly good shot that six piggy goldfish will just end up eating the eggs, or should we get on the horn with LFS's to see if any of them will take some newborn fry? the female is a ryukin and the two males are both fantails, i don't know if that matters any at all.

More than likely you won't have any make it to the free-swimming stage. Goldfish are notoriously piggy and usually eat their eggs right after they spawn. The only way you will get some fry is if you save eggs.

Yea, generally you need spawn mops or nets to have any success.
Stores also generally don't want newborn fry, you have to raise them up to a selling size (usually 1.25").
When my goldfish breed, there's always a third one following, eating the eggs as they fall down.

well there are no eggs as of this morning, so we don't have to worry about finding homes for a bunch of little poop-factories. how often can we expect this to happen in a sex-integrated goldfish tank?
